What started in 1937 as a request by Milton Hershey for “a nice garden of roses” has grown over the years to a 23 acre public garden: the Hershey Gardens. The original 3 ½ acres opened in 1937, but grew to its approximate current size by 1942. Current summer displays include roughly 5,000 roses.
